Elizabeth Dorsey Smith Papers

Collection includes books and articles written by Dorsey Smith, EdD, RN, who has worked as a nurse researcher, nursing professor, and nurse administrator over the course of her career, which included time as a faculty member at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing. There are also presentations she has written, photographs, and subject files concerning courses taught and organizations with which she has been involved.

Biographical Sketch

Elizabeth Dorsey Smith (1938–) graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1960. Shortly after gaining her Masters from the Teachers College at Columbia University in 1963, she began teaching at Cornell University. During her time there, she developed curriculum in maternal/child health, theory and practice, and guided students in a second-degree baccalaureate nursing program. In 1981 Mrs. Dorsey Smith began working as the Director of Nursing for the Women and Children’s Division of The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Dorsey Smith has done research into maternal/child health and women’s studies, and did some of her main research on the study of baccalaureate nursing students in relation to women seeking elective abortions. She has also contributed to and published many books on related subjects.

Scope and Contents Notes

This collection largely includes records of Elizabeth Dorsey Smith’s professional career and academic research, including correspondence regarding professional position, published works and academic research papers with related materials, speech drafts, and certificates recording academic and professional achievements. The collection also contains records regarding nursing courses taught during the 1960s-80s, including course proposals, descriptions, related materials, and exams. Also included are various artifacts related to Mrs. Dorsey Smith’s academic and professional focuses, such as medical wall charts and Lamaze records.

The collection has seven series: Professional Papers, Academic Research, Correspondence, Certificates, Photographs and Memorabilia, Publications, and Artifacts. Professional Papers, Academic Research, Correspondence and Certificates are arranged by subject and chronologically. Photographs and Memorabilia and Publications are arranged chronologically. Series 1: Professional Papers
This series is composed of records related to Mrs. Dorsey Smith’s position at various institutions during her professional career, including correspondence and course materials. The series is arranged into eight sub-series as follows: San Jose State College, Cornell University, Hunter College, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Pace University, College of New Rochelle, Teachers College, Columbia U., and Consultations. The sub-series are arranged chronologically where possible.
Series 2: Academic Research
This series is composed of records related to Mrs. Dorsey Smith’s research focuses, including paper drafts with related materials, correspondence, speech drafts, and convention followings. The series is arranged by subject and each subject is arranged chronologically when possible.
Series 3: Correspondence
This series is composed of correspondence to and from Mrs. Dorsey Smith. The series is arranged into two sub-series: Professional and Personal. The sub-series are arranged by subject where applicable.
