Nurses House Archives

This collection contains the records of the business activities of Nurses House from 1924-2008. It follows its growth as a vacation and convalescence home for nurses until the sale of the house in 1960. From that point on, it records the activities of Nurses House, Inc., a nationwide charity which works to assist nurses in need. It includes some records of Cobble Court, Inc., an enterprise begun and run by unemployed nurses during the Great Depression, which turned over its resources to Nurses House in 1935.

Highlights of the collection include a selection of portrait photographs of women involved in Nurses House throughout the years. These large, high-quality photos demonstrate the wide variety of leadership directing Nurses House through its various incarnations. Also found in the photograph collection are many candid and casual photos of nurses enjoying the house, grounds and beach house during its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s.

Another strong area in the collection is the very large body of committee reports, meeting minutes and annual reports. These records give a thorough view of the day to day business of Nurses House, as well as the changes that took place throughout the years. They represent a very long period of time, from the late 1920s through the 1990s.

Also of particular strength and interest are the histories of Nurses House. These Histories were written and printed for a variety of commemorative events, and provide insight into the attitudes toward Nurses House at different points in its existence.

Administrative History

By Molly Beisler and Rachel DonaldsonNurses House is a charitable organization that gives short-term financial assistance to registered nurses in difficulty as a result of injury, illness or disability. Currently based in Guilderland, NY, Nurses House began as house on Long Island that was a place for nurses to go for rest, recuperation, or recreation.

In 1922, Emily Howland Bourne (1835-1922) left a bequest of $300,000 to the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor [which became the Community Service Society] to establish and maintain a country place “where nurses could obtain needed rest.” A “need for such services was demonstrated at the old Red Cross house in Bay Shore, established immediately after the First World War. This home was about to close when a bequest left by Emily Howland Bourne as an evidence of her personal gratitude to nurses who had cared for members of her family was made known.”[1] With part of these funds, a house was purchased and renovated in the township of West Islip, Long Island, on Merrick Road, near town of Babylon, NY. In 1924 Nurses House officially opened to received nurses as guests.

Nurses House was founded to be a place for nurses to go for rest between jobs or for recuperation when ill – for vacation or convalescence. Modest fees were charged according to income. The property had spacious grounds with flower gardens. The majority of nurses who stayed there were from New York and New Jersey, but nurses from around the United States and various foreign countries traveled to stay there.

Nurses House grew in the 1930s and 1940s, attracting many guests to stay there. The house was typically full during the summer months, filling up again during holidays. The Eleanor Robson Belmont Wing was added to the house in 1940 (groundbreaking April 2, 1940) to add more single rooms for guests. The new wing was paid for through a fund drive led by Eleanor Belmont that brought in donations from the New York State Nurses Association, the American Red Cross, nursing school alumnae associations, public health nursing organizations, hospital staff and student nurses. Nurses House purchased beach property on Great South Bay and a beach house was built in 1944.

Much of Nurses House’s growth was related to the transfer of funds and assistance from Cobble Court, Inc., a nurses’ auxiliary established during the Great Depression when unemployment among nurses was widespread. Cobble Court was an “150-yr-old house on First Avenue that was turned into a tea-room and gift shop where unemployed nurses sold they handiwork and shared in an attractive business for those unhappy years. When in 1935 this business was no longer needed, the nurses decided to transfer their interest to the Nurses House in Babylon and to this day, Cobble Court, Inc. stands as a symbol of nurses’ generosity to nurses.”[2]

From 1946 until the sale of the physical structure that was Nurses House, the maintenance and administration of the house had been the sole function of Nurses House, Inc. This organization had a dues paying membership of some 800 individual nurses and a few friends of nursing; a growing number of alumnae associations in the metropolitan area have group memberships.[3]

By early the 1950s, as working situations for nurses improved and moved out of the private arena, fewer nurses chose to use the facilities. Steadily costs rose as fewer and fewer guests came to stay. By the late 1950s it became necessary to dip into capital funds to meet operating costs.

The property was sold in April, 1960 and in May of that year Nurses House, Inc. ceased to be an actual “house” but rather became an organization that provided financial assistance to professional nurses in need.

Nurses House is currently managed by the Foundation of the New York State Nurses Association Inc. in Guilderland, NY. Various chapters have been formed and disintegrated throughout the years. Currently, Nurses House has four chapters: Western New York, Nassau-Suffolk (also in New York), Mid-Hudson (New York) and Cherokee (Chattanooga, TN). The chapters serve as fundraising and publicity distributing bodies for the national charity.
